Heritage Bench Program

Point Lobos State Natural Reserve & Carmel River State Beach

The Point Lobos Foundation’s Heritage Bench Program offers a meaningful way to honor loved ones while supporting the beauty and accessibility of our parks.

Program Overview

  • Benches are placed only in pre-approved, high-need areas within Point Lobos State Natural Reserve and Carmel River State Beach as determined by California State Parks.
  • Each bench features an engraved plaque with inspirational language approved by California State Parks.

Donation & Eligibility

  • A minimum tax-deductible donation of $10,000 is required.
  • Donors must complete a Tribute Bench Application.
  • Contributions are made to the Point Lobos Foundation and are deductible to the extent allowed by law.

Bench Specifications & Placement

  • All benches must be approved by California State Parks.
  • Placement is determined based on park needs and environmental conditions.
  • Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.

Plaque Guidelines

  • Plaques are centered on the backrest.
  • Wording must be inspirational and approved by State Parks. No images or acronyms permitted.
  • Examples are available upon request.

Installation & Maintenance

  • The Point Lobos Foundation coordinates construction and delivery after receiving your donation.
  • Installation and maintenance are handled by State Parks staff.
  • Benches are for public use and will naturally weather over time.
  • If damaged, donors may choose to repair or replace at their own expense (work must be performed by State Parks staff).

Term & Renewal

  • Each bench is dedicated for a 10-year term.
  • Donors have the option to renew at the end of the term.
  • If not renewed, the bench may be rededicated and the original plaque returned to the donor.

Donor Responsibilities

  • Keep your contact information current with the Point Lobos Foundation to ensure timely renewal notices and plaque return.
